Its a age-old sign of strength and masculinity. It stems from a woman's primal instincts to find a man who will protect her and be able to look after her well (ie: hunt, build a hut, etc.)
It makes guys look bigger and stronger and less wimpy and girls like it because they can lean on it and all that romantic junk, but I don't care personally, that's just what I hear....
