What makes a classic album

I had an argument with my brother the other day which revolved around his contention that Astral Weeks couldn't be a classic album because it hadn't sold many copies.
So does anyone have an opinion about whether an album that hasn't sold a lot can be a classic. Also is there anyone who's got an opinion about Astral Weeks itself. For e.g has anyone heard it who thinks it's not a classic?

album sales have absolutely nothing to do with whether or not an album is considered a classic. ask your retard of a brother whether or not he thinks any of britney spears' albums are classics. the only thing that matters is the music itself.

I like the notion that classic albums have to have brought something to the table and perhaps influence alot of folks all around them, thus creating new subgenres and in some cases completely new genres...

A classic album in my opinion, has mostly great material and very few weak moments... and very often, but not always, has many songs revolving around some sort of theme, sometimes quite loosely...

I don't think there is any doubt it's a classic album. The fact that it didn't ever reach massive commercial popularity and is still one of the most influential albums of the genre makes it all the more classic in my opinion.

well there a pretty New band and unknown i mean one of there main albums came out in 2008 last year

how can they be a classic already

A classic album is an album that you pick up 10 to 20 years later, and upon playing it are still overwhelmed with emotion or your mind melts with the corabination of certain beats that the album employs.

To be clear you do not have to feel the same emotion you felt when first playing it. The most classic example being Pink Floyd's The Wall
