What led to the decline of GM?

A huge part of the problem is the union contracts that the employees have. They make a huge amount of money while they are working for the company and then they get to retire early and make almost as much as they did while they were working. A lot of the retirees are able to be retired for 20 to 30 years before they die so GM has to keep paying out all that money. It is good for the employees to get paid well and all but the unions should not have been so greedy. My uncle worked for GM for 30 years and retired with absolutely no money problems at all and that is the way it should be but even he said that he gets paid too much and said that he would gladly reduce his retirement if it could help the company stay open but his union will not allow it. He donated a lot of money to his community instead though till the day he died because he felt guilty seeing people lose their jobs to pay him. Hope I have been helpful.

I think it was when GM went Front-Wheel Drive with Cadillac. Also when GM decided to downsize Cadillac and killed off Oldsmobile. Oldsmobile was a force within General Motors.
Please keep all answers based on my question. I am not asking about the 2000's. True car fans will know that I am asking about the 1980's, 1990's. Car Crazy fans respond.

Primarly because GM has unreliable vehicles and only had low milage cars. There trying to improve but still lacking. Oh and no Oldsmobile was never a force but a bust, thats why thery were discontinued.
