What kind of training should I put in for Sprinting?

Im doing winter track this coming winter and I would like to improve my speed at the 60 m race. Should I focus a lot on Weight training and core exercises or just running?
 
I am a distance runner so take my advice with a grain of salt. Anyways at my high school one of the many coaches we have is from russia and helped trained the russian athletes. The guy is amazing and funny but he also knows what he is talking about. The main thing he stresses with every group of kids he meets is "explosive energy".

He also focus surprisingly on lots of weights. He has us go out and run for a little bit of distance (4-5) miles then you hit the weights hardcore. One of the main things he loves is the squats! Learn the correct form and you will benefit yourself in the long run!
