What kind of paint are you suppose to use on pumpkins?

I want to paint my pumpkins this year instead of carving. I went to a pumpkin patch and they have really cool professional paintings on the pumpkins. I thought I should try it out, but I don't know what kind of paint to use. Can any of you yahoo answer users help me??
 
We used permanent markers and acrylic paints. But you can use anything that will stick and not bead up, like spray paint, nail polish and henna. I would think you should avoid something like watercolors or tempera mixed with water, but you could try them and see.
