What kind of jobs to expect in magazine publishing?

I would love to write for magazines like GQ, Men's Health, Cosmo, Esquire, Maxim, whatever. I've always wanted to write for a magazine. I don't know even where to start or if it's even a solid, secure job. What is it like? What kind of jobs are there? Where can I start? What can I do to make myself a desired candidate for a job in magazines??
