What kind of inspection should I get for a new, used vehicle?

I am about to buy a vehicle from my friends, friend and I do not trust anyone with buying a vehicle. I want him to meet me at the mechanics shop and I would like a full inspection of the vehicle - or at least just things that are important to make sure the car is not going to kick the bucket any time soon.

What specific things should I asked to be looked at?

It is a 98' Audi A4 Quattro
With 98,000 miles
Oops, 2.8. And it is an automatic transmission.
