I live in an area where bears can just pop out of the woods into common areas. I'm looking for a gun that I would be easy to carry, and stop or slow down a bear when I go walking.
The majority of the bears are brown bears.

If its Black Bears than a .44 Magnum or a .41 Magnum. If you wanted to cary a little bit heavier more dependable I'd say a 500S&W

for best results it really is best to use bear spray (less aiming needed)...but other then that i would Carry a Glock 10mm for the smallest and lightest or a 44 mag...nothin smaller caliber wise.

As long as it is a 10mm, 41 mag, 44mag, 454 casull, 460S&W, 500S&W.

Smallist and lightist is Glock 29 or Smith & wesson 329PD

if you listen to those dufuses who say 9mm you're going to wind up dead. you need a big bore gun you can count on, like a 44 mag or 454 or similar calibers. you also have to be able to hold on to it when it goes off. if not, learn how to run faster than 35 mph.

Assuming you can handle it, I wouldn't recommend anything smaller than a .44 Magnum. Several years ago, my wife's uncle was hunting in Colorado. He stepped about 100 yards away from camp to answer nature's call. He left his rifle at camp, but was carrying his .44 Magnum revolver. Suddenly a bear stood up about 50 feet in front of him and started lumbering toward him, He fired 5 shots from the revolver at center mass, and the bear finally fell down. When they dressed out the bear, they found that four of the five shots hit the bear's heart.

If you were to be attacked by a Bear, I doubt that size of the revolver would be an issue.

Start with a .44 Ruger Redhawk in a 5 or 7 inch barrel, and load Buffalo Bore 340 plus P rounds.

There is also a Ruger Alaskan in 2 inch 454 Casul.

Good Luck.

Not to sound sexist but most woman can't fire a handgun big enough to stop a Brown bear. Buy the pepper spray and make plenty of noise when you are outdoors. This will scare them off before you get close.

A 9mm WILL WORK if you hit the head. But its not a good choice because if your being a ttacked by a bear you arent thinking to straight and you probably wont hit what your aiming at. Anything larger than a .45 ACP will be effective, and be sure to use hollow point bullets.

a 357 pistol is good . if by stop you mean spurtig blood from the6 inch crater. or to have around the house a 270 lowest 30-06 is good wachout for the kick on th 30-06 though have fun killing brownies
