What kind of fish should I get for a small tank?

I have a 2.5 gallon fish tank with a filter (I don't have a heater but I can get one if needed). I know its a really small tank, but if possible I would love to have more than one fish in it. I am looking for something colorful that's fairly easy to take care of. Also I don't really want to get a Beta fish, I know they are simple but everyone seems to have them and I want something a bit more unique. Thanks!

You can get 1 pair of small killifish, but i really don't recommend it. 2.5 gallons isn't really big enough for even a betta to be truly healthy.

If you have tank lighting then you can do a small aquatic garden and add some shrimp.

Actually, several shrimp and a bunch of rocks/caves can be a ton of fun. Shrimp antics are hilarious. You can also add a snail, they can be pretty funny too.

There isn't all that much of a selection for a 2.5 gallon tank especially if you want more than one fish in it.

Like, another poster said, guppies, but 2 is pushing it.

Just get a bigger tank and cycle it before you get any fish.

Bettas are oftenly kept in 2.5g tanks without a problem.

I keep my Betta in a 3 gallon, not heated and not filtered tank, the reason I can maintain this is because I have a healthy stock of beneficial bacteria in his gravel, green algae growth is a sign of a stable tank.

I know you don't want them but 2.5 gallons is a bit small and really the only other thing you could keep in there are ghost and cherry shrimp.

Good luck!!!~~~~<><~~~~><>~~~~
