What kind of Financing activity yields the highest return?

A few months ago, I read an article that Shia Lebouf, in preparation for the film "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps," he was researching how to be a successful financier. Through his research he talked to big timers like Warren Buffet etc., and within a 6 month period he was able to make roughly $600,000 with a $10,000 startup. Now I was just wondering, what kind of investment/financing activities would allow him to see this kind of return. I'm a business school student so I just been running through various industry stocks that make headlines now and again but it seems like he probably went a different round considering some of the stocks I've looked at give you a 20% return in a 3 month period, so your basically looking at $2000 gain off one stock for 3 months, if you invest the whole $10000 in , but his gains has to be much more significant. So basically, if per say I wanted to learn how to do this as effectively as him, would I want to look at Futures contracts , stock options, bonds, currency, etc. ? Also if you could include any diversification tips between these, it would be helpful as well. Thanks!
