Ive heard u can have illegal engines in a Pickup Truck but i dont want to put an illegal one in, but wat all engines would be illegal?

You can put in any engine you want as long as it can pass emissions for the original model year. or register as a hobby vehicle which limits use.

Engine swaps must be of the same year, or newer.

If your vehicle comes with emissions (being a 1985, it does), the new engine must retain all the emissions equipment, cat converter, etc.

Original or similar would be legal. but check with your state DMV office as they should have a pamphlet detailing what conversions are legal.
