what kind of doctor to see?

First, i saw a family practitioner. He sent me to a specialist, an orthopedic surgeon. That guy wanted to fuse me after seeing the MRI results. Fine that's his opinion. I want a second. I called a different orthopedic surgeon's office and told them i was looking for a 2nd opinion for a herniated disc and the lady that answered said that the dr's in her office don't work with my kind of problem, i need a spine and joint dr or something like that. If i have a herniated disc, should i be seeing an orthopedic surgeon or "spine" dr. or some other kind of dr? I don't really know anything about specialists or herniated discs (other than they hurt). Can someone give me an idea of who i want to talk to about the MRI results and options other than fusion, please?
 
If there is a nuerosurgeon in your area, that's who you need to see. I wouldn't even think about having a fusion unless 3 doctors told me that's what I need. Good Luck to you.
 
You need to find another Orthopedic Spine Surgeon (they are the type that ONLY work on spines) or a Neurosurgeon. If you are covered by insurance go to the website under "find a doctor" and you can likely search under both of these categories.
 
just exactly where IS your disc issue located within the spinal levels? that too can matter in what type of surgeon is best. do you yopurself actually have your very own copy of that MRI report? if not, get one. you should alwasys obtain all of your own testing results just so you can read thru them yourself? and their just good to have in your own little medical file that you can keep at home on yourself too? if you do have that report, if you could actually type out what is in that very last page called the 'summary' here, it would help us to really see what that rad report states in HIS own worRAB? the way any rad actually worRAB a particular finding can matter much more than you think. marcia
