What kind of car bike rack do I need?

Today I bought a (men's) Trek 7000 bike from my local bike shop. My car is a 99 Ford Escort. It's my first 'real' bike and I'm so excited and intent on taking the BEST care of it. The least expensive bike rack they had was $100, so I decided to research it, and maybe be able to find a good used one online. I'm new to all of this, so I don't know how many different kinds there are and if brand matters; all I know is my bike doesn't fit inside my car. Thanks for any help!

I always start with this site. I bought a Saris Bones because it had to fit over my wing spoiler. Start with the Rack Fit Guides.

i'm a huge fan of thule racks. they have the simplest, strongest, sturdiest designs and don't fade in the sun like yakima.

for under $100, you're going to be looking for a rear mounted rack, and your car shouldn't be very quirky at all and would probably work with most any trunk racks that you find.

I use Yakima, personally. They have many different ones that fit in a trailer hitch or on the roof. My favorite feature is that you can make all components lock and use only one key.

I like the ones that don't require you to remove the front wheel. It makes for easier loading & less waiting to ride when you get there.

The link helps find all the racks that will work with your car.
