I am taking part in my first sprint triathlon in June. I have started my training but need to buy a bike. I am female, but I prefer a man's bike. Would this be appropriate? Can I use a mountain bike? Can you recommend a make and model? I don't want to spend too much and may even try and source a good second hand model. Also I'm 5ft 5", what size bike will I need? Thanks!

mens frames are not made the same as women's. buy a women's bike. unless you are built like a man. first bike i wouldn't spend less than 1000.00. unless it's a deal go to a bike shop get fitted properly, have the people there preferably a woman to help you with models to choice from. used look for full 105 componants atleast. if you can get a bike with 105 for less than a grand in good shape get it. for sizing around a 52cm frame. but go to a shop for sizing. you could use a mtn bike if you already have one. there are tons of bikes that could be recommended for first timers.

You're not going to get a very good road bike that's cheap.

They're pretty expensive.

Look at the price for just this frame

You could possibly use a mountain bike, but you will want street tires on it.

For sizing just go to a bike store, and stand on top of the bike frame in between your handle bars and seat. If your crotch is above the top bar by 1" that's a good size. You can find cheap road bikes for $250-$300, decent ones for $900-$1400 and if you want to go custom, well, consider saving up for a bit.

Also, if you go to a bike store look at the bike you want and write down the name, model and year. Then go look it up online when you get home and check other stores prices. Go back to your bike shop and see if they can match the price. Should save a bit of money.
