What it takes to be an author?

Hi, Im still in school, but I have this big outrageous dream to be an author. I have started writing awesome poems and some deep short stories that my english teacher adores and I have found my passion. I still have many career paths to choose ahead of me, but I love to write. I just want to know if I should make a big jump and go right to writing or if i should looking for some more simple and easier job to do.

you could try being in the newspaper first, although thats probably a lot different then being a real author. Dont give up on your dream! Make no mistake, its going to be beyond difficult, particularly in this economy, less publishers are publishing, but no worries, if youre truly a good passionate writer, there will always be a place for you =)
