“Dang, Shanna!” Katherine Collins, my best friend, exclaimed, panting.
I turned around. “Seriously, Kay, I’ll slow down as soon as they extend the time between classes. You can’t actually expect me to take time to ogle at guys when Mr. Egdoe still murders any latecomers.”
She smirked. “Well, I have Ms. Cumberland, and a big crush on that new guy, although he was definitely more interested in you.”
I mimed throwing my history textbook at her. “Shut up!”
“Ooh… I can see it now: Shoshanna Mallory and Hale Harding. K-I-S-S-I-N-G!” she teased.
I smiled. “Whatever.”
I twirled a strand of black hair on my index finger. Kay had to be kidding; guys didn’t notice me unless they were pointing out every single flaw I had. Or that pervert who asked me to go out with him last year.
Kay pounced on me. “C’mon, Shanna, forget Mr. Ego and go talk to the boy of your dreams!”
I brushed her off and started walking again. “He’s not my type.”
“Oh really? You don’t like the guys with luscious long hair- dark hair, by the way- and deep blue eyes, and way tall? And… junior?”
I sighed, a bit melodramatically, but hey, that’s me. “Not my type in personality. Absolutely my type in looks.”
“A guy’s personality can be trained, changed.” She raised one eyebrow. “Go for it, Shanna.”
Okay, that’s it, she had made Shoshanna Mallory completely annoyed. “Katherine Collins, I am not going out with Hale! If it were true he liked me, which he certainly does not! And if he wasn’t such a mess of a person, which he is!”
Kay rolled her eyes. She knew she had won. I knew it too, but I don’t admit defeat so easily as most people think.
The bell rang, seeming, as always, to shatter my eardrums. I groaned. “Oh, thanks. Now I’ll be roadkill in the Egdoe highway!”
She laughed. I was not so easily amused. I ran down the long hallway to room B130; Egdoe’s World History.
His voice was sweet as sugar when I opened the door, which undoubtedly meant he had some unpleasant words for me. “Miss Mallory, how nice of you to join us! We were all worried!”
I chuckled humorlessly. “Um, well… better late than never?”
He walked over to my desk, and motioned me to follow. “Yes. Maybe you’d like to demonstrate what I was just talking about?”
There was no way out of his trap, at least none that I could figure out. “Well… Mr. Egdoe, I don’t know what you were…”
He ushered me to the front of the room. “Perfect. You have just demonstrated the prime reason why truants have trouble in school. They don’t know what their teachers are talking about when they are finally forced to come back to school by way of the United States law.” He looked at me. “Miss Mallory, tardiness is one step away from truancy.”
I stood there, uncomfortable. “Errr… okay, Mr. Egdoe?”
He smiled grimly. “Take your seat, Miss Mallory. I can see no hope in you.”
The girl who sat next to me then, Haley Black, leaned over. “No hope!” she exclaimed and we struggled not to giggle- that was another offense kids dared not commit near Egdoe. He saw us, though, and frowned. We immediately straightened.
