What is your opinion on the FUNI DBZ dub?

And by that, I'm talking about the most recent versions, not what it used to be.

The redub of the Saiyan and early Namek arcs, the re-done Season 3 (Chris Sabat re-did his Vegeta voice), and the Cell and Buu arcs.

The widescreen thing is no longer a problem, as the Dragonbox corrects this. The dub music, if you hated it, is no longer an issue either. Thoughts?
 
....Yea, no....Kid goku she made sound young and pure, Adult goku with kiddy voice is just werid though.

Also I thought the over the top performances of the English VA's are what made the English dub so great, kind of like those old kung-fu movies, yea its chessy, but thats why I love it!
 
Bad dialog, bad acting, and horrible voices.

John Burgmeier (sp?) as Tenshinhan is one of the few that i can stand. Sean Schemmel grew on me. I can't stand Tiffany Volmer's Bulma. I do like the voice of Chichi. The best cast villain is Cell. Most of the actors sound very forced. Oh, 18 has a very sexy voice.
 
I fricken loved the redub of the Sayian and Namek arcs. The first Funi dub was too cheesy and amateurish. And even though I liked most of the Faulconer music it could really ruin the mood of the show sometimes. But the redub accompanied by Nathan Johnsons score was just plain awesome. The voice acting was more professional and the music felt more appropriate.

Sigh, I really wished they had redubbed the whole series and not just the first 67 episodes.
 
he doesn't have a kiddy voice. He doesn't have a deep voice but it still fits his character. The japanese VAs can be over the top as well, but they know how to pick their spots and know how to sell a serious moment.

Mike McFarland is... okay as Muten Roshi when he's goofy but i don't buy him as the wise old master. His original VA is so good at being the pervert as well as being the wise master.
 
The redub with the Japanese music on the Dragon Box sets is not bad but not that good either. Part of it has to do with the many many translation and continuity errors that were ported over from the old Saban dub.

The voice acting itself, while not as good as the Japanese version, is acceptable. It's improved considerably since the early days of Funi's in-house dubbing.
 
It makes for fine parody material, that's for sure.


I like a lot of the actors on the project, but the main problems stems from the writing screwing up the characters and the casting being terrible. It's bittersweet the best anime company would also have one of the worse dubs, but that's how things are right now.


More on casting: FUNimation's in-house dub pulled in novices to imitate already badly cast actors, so that's bound to screw things up. Then they continue to have terribly written (if sourced from initially terriblely translated scripts) dub scripts for the twelve actors working on the show to read off of. Not exactly a good corabination. Fifteen years later we have a fractured North American fanbase, blah, blah, blah.
 
I'd call it middle-of-the-road. I mean, this is DBZ we're talking about, not Shakespeare. There's nothing incorrect about any of the criticisms of the translation, naming conventions, continuity errors, acting, etc., but at the end of the day none of that results in a totally unwatchable dub. I've seen much better, but I've also seen much worse.
 
Not every single line is suppose to be silly. Not that one with only knowledge of the dub might get that, considering how poorly written and directed the dub is.
 
I don't really like the Japanese voices but that's just me. Especially Goku's voice. I've always found it annoying.

To be honest the only Japanese voices I like are Frieza's, Cell's, and Vegeta's and like one or two others.

I've always liked and enjoyed the English version of the Dragon Ball series. From DB to GT(ugh... gt). The voices never bothered me and I like them the way they are.
It's the same way with most anime. Most of the time I prefer English voices over Japanese voices and I find them more entertaining.
 
My thoughts exactly. It's not a GOOD dub by any means, but, well, I'm not watching DBZ for its depth of plot and thought-provoking dialogue. It's entirely servicable, and, more often than not, is the way I watch the show. Corny dialogue and bad jokes just add to the fun.
 
what about tiffany volmer's bulma? or the US fat Buu?

Sabat, nice guy, can't act to save his life. Doesn't help that he does a million voices on the show. His voices are so forced.

Stephanie Nadolny's Gohan is okay, but her kid Goku is horrible. I hate her inflections
 
Funny thing is, I'm the same way, but it's mainly with just FUNimation's shows. If I'm getting a FUNi DVD, I already know I'm getting a quality dub.

Sure there are exceptions. FLCL, Eureka Seven, Cowboy Bebop, s-CRY-ed, Samurai Champloo, (why are all these shows ones that aired on [as]?) Paranoia Agent, Gurren Lagaan Bleach and Naruto, and probably some more that I can't remeraber are all non-FUNi shows that I enjoy the dub equally or more than for.

However, that's only if I'm wowed by the voice acting by episode 1 or 2. Sorry, but I can be verrrry picky and critical when it comes to dubs.
 
Like I said they're not bad to me and have never bothered me.
When I see some of these posts it just comes across as common dub vs. sub crap.
It all just comes down to personal preference.

Also Fat Buu in Japanese actually makes me cringe.
 
i'm not a hardcore dubbie or subbie. I prefer funi's Tenshinhan to his japanese counterpart and i like chichi's american voice, but that's really about it. I love a lot of the Ocean dub actors though like Ian Corlette who's only a step below Nozawa. Their Piccolo is great, as well as their voice for Yamcha and Bulma. I adore Saffron Henderson.

Volmer's voice is like nails on a chalkboard. Corabine it with awful dialog and it just compounRAB the problem.
