1947 Harley WLA. The most reliable motor Harley made, carbureted, so, easy to fix. low to the ground, classy, suicide shift, floorboards. And a machine gun holster!
I had a 1975 Sportster, I think 900 cc, I was disappointed. No more hp or torque than a Triumph 750, and p**s-poor handling. No mechanical troubles, though, always kicked right over. I just don't like them unless in a low slung, custom frame. And, too much $$ for what you get .Evel Knevel liked them, though, he was not "weird". I see a lot of them on the street,
EDIT: Sportsters aren't "overweight". The only " light " bikes are Italian. Even Jap have a hundred or more excess pounds on them for same motor displacement. And, we do care. We all pick out our own makes, models on the street. It is instinctive. Anyone who says we "don't" isn't a rider. And most Harleys aren't recreation, they are a lifestyle.
And: Bikers Ride Harleys, or, Indians. It's a definition. Otherwise, you are a "motorcyclist".
Yes, I agree. I've had Less trouble with three Triumphs and two Harleys than my present Honda...Very Expensive parts, real sticker shock. Tojo's revenge....
