What is wrong with this Jeep?

I drove my parents' Jeep a little while ago and this happened...

I was driving up a highway about 60 mph when the car started slowing down, by itself ( it was not out of gas) i pushed the gas down harder but it made no difference, i noticed the RPMs were going up though as I did this, speed was decreasing. I pumped the gas a couple times ( I was now at 40 mph) it did nothing, so i kept my foot at a constant pressure on the gas and suddenly it lurched forward with a VROOOM to 55 and it was fine. Later in the day this happened again. This whole thing took place in a span of about 12 seconds (if this helps at all)
Someone suggested transmission, someone else thought misfiring? your thoughts? and if you do think misfiring please explain to me what that is..

This is a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland...

Depends what year jeep it is. If its older, your problem is older jeeps werent meant to drive up hills at high speeds. And maybe once you reached the top of the hill your jeep could now finally put as much punch in as you were trying to get it to do
