I have a 1998 Ford Mustang (coup) and something is wrong with it but im just not sure what.
1) i got into my car and closed the door but the interior light and dinging sound would not turn off. I checked the switches and made sure the doors were shut, but it still wouldnt go off.
2) after i finished driving, i smelled something that smelled like something was on fire or burning. (hopefully it wont my car- not sure if it was in the environment or not tho!) but its happened twice and so has the non stop dinging sound.

tomorrow i will be taking it to an auto zone or something and maybe they can tell me, but what do you think it could be?
well, i popped open the cover of the interior light and took out the bulb so my battery wouldnt die.

Your car has a light switch inside the latch on the door itself. This is a common issue with late model ford cars and trucks since almost all of them have a similar assembly.

Sometimes you can simply open and shut the door several times and it will start working again, but that is not a fix. It will only get you by for a temporary period of time. Whenever this happened to me, I sprayed some white lithium grease into the latch assembly and then opened and closed the door 15 to 20 times. White lithium grease is available at almost all parts stores.

As far as the burning goes, if you discover it only after you drove for a while, check the exhaust pipes to see if something stuck to it and is burning off. If that is not the case, you may have to have your electrical system checked out. Good luck?

when you close the door it activates a switch ,open your door and look for it ,it is usually located on the front side of the door well

one thing to check is the switch in the door that turns off the lights. It might not be a switch some are in the outside door handle but where ever its at lightly lubricated.

The problem is that it's a Ford Mustang ,get a Chevy Camero but make sure it's a V8 and not the 6.
