Hi all, new to this so here goes.
A year ago in May I just started coughing out of the blue and coughed up blood. The more I coughed, the more I bled. Wife took me to hospital where a diagnosis of untreated pneumonia was made. I have coughed ever since then, no blood, just coughing all the time. I have used every inhaler known to man with no relief. I have had CT scans, PET scans, MRI's, Bronchoscopy, x-rays, ALL NORMAL OR OK so what is wrong with me? When I cough I get little to no mucus and what I do get is a clear glue like substance. Doctors are baffled and all they want to do is keep giving me inhalers. Anyone out there sound like my situation, I would love to hear from you.

Hi, welcome to the board.

I've had a chronic cough for years. It can be really miserable and have a significant impact on your daily life.

A chronic cough could certainly be a symptom of asthma. Have you been to a Pulmonologist? Have you had Pulmonary Function testing or a Methacholine challenge test? They could confirm whether or not you have asthma. If it really is asthma, the inhalers should give you some sort of relief.

Another thing that can cause a dry chronic cough is acid reflux. I have reflux with a chronic cough as my main symptom. (Not all reflux involves heartburn.) For this, I see a Gastroenterologist. Upper Endoscopy's (EGD's) are standard tests there, but mine never show anything. I also had a Modified Barium Swallow and Esophagram that confirmed I was having 'silent' reflux with food and acid coming up from my stomach that I was unaware of. It would show if you are aspirating into your lungs. The gold standard test for confirming reflux is a 24 hr pH. They put a tube down your nose to the bottom of your esophagus for 24 hours with a computer monitoring the amount of reflux that is coming up. If you don't want to wait for testing, you could try an OTC PPI to see if it helps your symptoms any. When I was first diagnosed, it took finding the correct PPI and dosage that worked best for me. With the cough, I found that I needed to take the PPI's twice a day.

Other common causes of chronic coughing are allergies, sinus infections and PND.

It was helpful for me to do an internet search using the key worRAB of 'chronic cough'.

If you drank a lot your esophegus (sic) can get like hemorrhoiRAB, or vericose veins that bleed. Not saying that this is the reason, but do get checked out well by good eye, ear, nose and throat specialist
