What is wrong if I like to ride a mountain bike on the road also?

I like biking on and off road, but the majority of the time I am on the road. What is the difference if I use a mountain bike on the road versus a road bike? Sorry if I sound ignorant, but I am when it comes to bikes. Isn't the only difference that I would have to "work harder" to ride the mountain bike on the road versus a road bike? Isn't it is "better work out" when riding the mountain bike on the road?
Talking about the Trek 4300 non-disc that I might buy.

PS the reason I really don't want a road bike is because I would like to be able to ride off-road when I have to and with a road bike you just cannot do that.

All opinions appreciated.
Thanks!
