what is up with my car?

I own a 06 suzuki forenza. The engine light went on and when I press the gas it slowly accelerates. and the indicator says I am in neutral but I was in drive. Any answers would help. I am going to take it to firestone but I don't want them to give me a song and dance would prefer to have some idea what is going on.
 
if you are under 36k miles take it back to the dealer as its under warranty, otherwise get it to a shop that can check it out propely NOT AUTOZONE
 
it could be the fuel injectors or if it is manual when driving if you hit the brake before you gear down this my cause it to go in neutral
