What is "unlocking a phone"? Why is it so popular?

Tomorrow i am going to get a new blackberry and i have just heard of this "unlocking" thing.
i heard that it works on almost all phones

what is unlocking a phone?
what are the advantages/ disadvantages?
what will happen if you unlock your phone?
and why do soo many people want to do it?
