This is some movie I watched maybe 10 years ago. I cannot quite remember if it was an anime movie or a cartoon movie. Either way it was drawn. So it was about this random boy (I think he had brown hair), something bad and surreal would happen to him and then he would wake up and realize it was only a dream. The story goes one, something else surreal happens then he wakes up and it is a dream again. This repeats over and over. And that way he sees new worlds. I remember in one of the worlds they were traveling in a boat on a river and i think there might have been monsters in the river. Another time he was hunted by some sort of king and there was this sequence with black smoke, which caused him to wake up and realize he was in a dream.
I think there was some girl he liked who pops up in every world, if i remember correctly she was brunette.
Also they wear formal clothing, like nice dresses, dress shirts etc, i can't really set the time period but it might have been 18th century or so, but i wouldn't bet on it. Maybe the time even changed with every world he entered.
all in all the tone was quite sinister
