What is this nonsense of people leaving just their 1st name with the host/hostess of a restaurant?

Perhaps I'm just getting old and contrary, but for some time now it's really been irking me when I go out to eat--"Mike, party of 4!" "Jennifer, party of 3!" And it always seems to be a super-common name; Like they're the only Mike and Jennifer on the planet Earth! LOL
I'm just asking. Does anyone else find this tacky? Heck, maybe this is just happening in my neighborhood! But it's driving me BoNkErS!!
