What is this mystery toggle switch in my mercury capri?

I noticed a small toggle switch under the glove compartment on the passenger door side. I bought the capri owners manual on ebay to find out what it was, but no luck. Can anyone tell me what it does?
Okay to update the question, it's a 91 Australian XR2 capri, . I will check monday if it is an ignition cut off switch. If it's a aftermarket alarm switch that was left after the alarm was taken out then I probably don't have to worry about it. Great ideas from everyone, and so quick to post too, thanks.
 
it could be a saftey switch that you flip so no one steals your car- flip it to the off position and try to start the car and see if it starts.
