What is the use of 6th gear in Bikes ?

I mean Yamaha R15 having 6th gear works a lot than Pulsar 220 having just 5 gears...

So what is the reason behind the 6th gear, what is the benefits of 6th gear technically ..

If pulsar uses this technology then they might get more power and top speed, then why they are not using it????
