What is the title of a novel about a man obsessed with finding the essence of the

soul?!? I read this book years ago and really want to read it again, but I can't remember the name of it! I was sure it was called "The Deaf House" but it never appears when I search under that title.

In the story the main character tries to discover the essence of the soul (I think!) and does various crazy things like killing animals and eventually tries to bring up young children who have never heard any sort of sound - this is where I thought the title Deaf House came from.

I really want to read this book again, anyone know the title or author?
