What is the speed of light? What is the distance of 1(one) light year?

In astro-physics I used to hear that some galaxy is 15 light year from earth or that The Sun is 8 light minutes fro earth. So my concern is to understand what unit of measure is "Light Year" in comparison to Meters or Kilometers?
 
The light travel at roughly 300000km/s which means that it takes about 8 mins and 20sec for the light of the sun to reach us
