I have been told that the smallest element of the Army's structure is a fire team which consists of about four men and is lead by a buck Sergeant or a Corporal. However, I have also read that the smallest official element is a Squad which is led by a Staff Sergeant. Which is the smallest element of the US Army's structure and who is it usually commanded by? Is a team an official element of the Army's structure? And do buck Sergeants ever command squads?
