What is the relationship between rap and traditional poetry?

I'm not a rap fan, but I am a fan of poetry, classical and contemporary. I've heard much rap, and a small percentage, maybe 5%, seems to be poetry on the scale of the masters. A couple of examples would be Suga Free and Del the Funky Homosapien. While I don't agree with the message of much rap, I find it hard to deny that the verses rival any recognized master poetry. Am I mistaken as to the artistic value, and should we include certain rap in the curriculum of poetic education?

Look up Wale and Lupe, they are bit more poetic. For rappers like them, the question is what's the DIFFERENCE from rap and poetry. Rap is an art, I disagree with the majority of the typical popular rappers, because they talk about sex, drugs, and girls, and degrade the women. But either way, majority is talent, and sometimes you get sincere, great artists from rap like Wale, who support women and speak intelligently and poetically. I think rap is to poetry as cats are to felines. It's a subcategory I guess, not that it makes it any less. Hope that helps, but I struggle with this question too, because I write poetry, and my brother rap. We try and find out what's the difference.

Good question.
