What is the rate law for this reaction?

C + D <---> CD
CD + D ----> CD_2 Slow step
CD_2 + D ----> CD_3

The answer is

k * [CD] * [D]

What i don't understand is why you don't sub in C + D <---> CD into the slow step (rate determining step).

So it comes out C + D + D ----> CD_2

I know you do this in some problems, try to sub in stuff, but what is different about this one that you don't do that procedure.
