What is the purpose of post-secondary school education?

Hear me out a bit.

Do people take post-secondary school education because they really want to learn about a certain subject, or is it just that piece of paper we will receive at the end? If it's for learning, wouldn't we take it outside in school? Back in middle school / high school, if you were really interested in something, you would take it outside of school, whether it was music, a course on investing, sports, etc. If it's for that piece of paper, is it because you can't become employed without one? What if you don't want to be employed by anyone? What if you wanted to do your own thing and have proved that it is sustainable? Then is there a purpose? People say that you don't even use a majority of what you learn in post-secondary school, so why are we learning it if we're just going to forget about it? What about those "BS" courses that usually require just good creativity and writing skills? What are the purposes of those courses?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
