What is the proper Yamaha Sound System set-up with DirecTV?

I recently bought a Yamaha sound system, but I seem to be having trouble getting sound to come out of the speakers. This is the setup I currently have:

DirecTV HD DVR connected to Yamaha receiver via HDMI Cable
Yamaha receiver connected to TV via another HDMI Cable.

I am getting a picture on the TV, but nothing but static coming through the speakers. Can someone pleas tell me what I need to do?
 
Your sound system or HD DVR may unsupport audio via HDMI connection, so you need to connect optical cable from HD DVR to Yamaha system for audio.
