they would trowel on to the wall every day wet plaster, a lime based cement, not plaster of paris, and paint with a water color mixture paint,which would soak into the wet plaster and become a part of the wall, the next day you remove all the unpainted plaster and add more wet plaster and paint on that this is a slow process
