What is the problem with my 1988 Honda Accord?

I had just had the front CV axles replaced (partly because the mechanic told me they were bad and also because they were making a squeeling, popping noise). I drove my 88 honda accord to a stoplight in October. When I pulled out, the power steering seemed strangely rough like I had to turn it with just a couple of pebbles stuck in the steering wheel. I pulled up to a stoplight and shifted into neutral (the car is manual) and then at green I tried shifting into first. I couldn't get the car to shift into any gear however. It just seemed like the transmission wasn't being engaged. When the tow man came we saw a large pool of engine oil under the car (engine oil is what the transmission takes).

I had it looked at by a mechanic who said that the clutch needed to be replaced. He was right but that wasn't the problem. Another friend replaced the clutch, refilled the engine oil in the transmission and all that and successfully drove the car around the block twice. He pulled into his driveway, and then tried to shift into gear again and lo and behold the car went nowhere and there was again a pool of engine oil under the car. He didn't complain about any power steering problems, but he said that this time there was some smoke.

Any ideas what is causing this problem?

When the Cv joints were replaced the drive shafts were removed from the gear box and taken to the bench for new parts to be fitted. When replacing the drive shaft into the gearbox care must be taken to ensure that the snap ring engages in the differential splines. In your case this has not been done and the drive shaft has worked it's way out of the differential (gearbox). Check the end of the drive shaft that goes into the gear box, you should see a wire ring in a groove about 1 mm dia. Get the haynes manual for the car and read how to refit the drive shafts.
