If an asteroid falls on earth, what is the probability that it hits an human being? In other words, what is the ration between "areas of the world habitated by human beings" divided by "surface of the earth". Thanks
I'd like to avoid contgroveries: I said "assuming an asteroid falls on earth", so it is a conditional probability. Also, I simplified the problem assuming it falls on inhabited surface in order to hit a man

Top cross-section area of human beings: about 5.1 x 10^9 m^2.
(population about 7 billion, some people live in apartments, some people are lying down)

Earth surface area: 510 x 10^12 m^2 (including land, water, and ice)

Ratio: 1 / 100,000 = 0.00001

But ... an "asteroid" is BIG thing, and if it falls on Earth it would blast out a huge area, much much bigger than the asteroid itself. Perhaps you are thinking of a meteorite?
