What is the PRND(+/-) on New Cars?

Hello,

I've always had auto-transmission. And, if going down eg. Cunningham's Gap, I would deliberately hold the trans. in 2 gear (low), or in a 4 speed (3rd gear).

Obviously the Drive position (in the more modern cars) with + or -, is designed for the same reasons? Is it holding eg. "-" to a lower ratio, and "+" to the what?

Probably sounds like a silly question, sorry!

Thanking-you,
Frederick.
