WHAT IS THE POINT OF HAVING A STANZA IN POETRY?

For example I have got a poem infront of me consisting of four paragraphs - each with 4 lines. Obviously this is classed as a stanza but what is the benefit of doing this. How does it aid the readers enjoyment of the poem?
