I am a foreigner and visiting the states in Ohio. I went to Giant Eagle to buy a bottle of red wine as a gift for my friends, who invited me to their home for dinner. I'm over 21 but asked to show my photo ID. I don't have an American ID but I have my passport, which both showed my photo and my birthday to prove that I'm over 21. But the staff there even the manager later refused to sell me the wine unless I showed them the ID. I told me I don't have this ID but I had my passport. They just didn't accept. I told them the purpose to show the ID is to prove that I'm over 21 and my passport both shows my photo and my birthday but they just said 'Law is the law'. What's more, I heard some guys around me laughing. I felt so bad. Maybe I'm the visitor, so they wanna make fun of me because I don't believe on this planet that there existed such a stupid law to show your ID rather than to show you're over 21. So what exactly is the law for drinking age in Ohio? I want to complain to their service if the law is to prove you're over 21. It just gave me the picture to see how this country is.

There is really no specific law. You have to prove, to the satisfaction of the store, that you are over 21. They are not required to serve you if they don't want to.

The problem is that most employees are not familiar with foreign passports. While it would be very difficult to pass off a fake US ID card, it would be very easy to give a fake foreign passport since people don't know what the real ones are supposed to look like. So it is too risky for them. If they accept it and it turns out to be fake, the government will fine them for selling alcohol to you.

they were being d!cks...or extremely lame...most places it wouldn't be a problem...the drinking age everywhere in the states is 21...some places they'll scan your ID so a passport obviously wouldn't scan but if it has your picture, and your birthdate they should've still sold to you...anyways f*ck em', go somewhere else and you shouldn't have a problem

the drinking age is 21. and a passport is a perfectly valid way to show age. I didn't get a drivers license until I was 23, so I used my passport until then and I never had a problem. So you do have a reason to be upset.
