About 5 years ago I had a book I really liked, however it was on loan from a friend and now I can only remember the plot, not the author's name or the title.
From what I can remember:
It concerns a family in America who live on a plain and are searching for gold.
The title character is a girl called Hester, and her younger brother Tinner who escapes the poverty of his surroundings by digging underneath his house, and who eventually lives underground in a network of these tunnels.
She has an older sister who goes to work in a rich persons house - the owner of which rapes her.
When Hester and her Father go to this man's house they find nothing but a large hole in the ground and walls splattered with blood, Hester falls through the floor and realises she is in Tinner's network of tunnels, and manages to get out but also realises that Tinner must have murdered her sister's rapist. (Of course this can't be proven.)
It ends with Tinner giving them gold he found in his tunnels.
The above summary doesn't really do the novel justice and I may have made some mistakes, but that is the general gist.
Does anyone know who the author/ what the title is?
Thanks
