...trouble than it's worth? OK, I remember reading this story in fifth grade about a space explorer that gets stuck on a planet with an experimental ray gun that disintegrates everything within something like 20 yards and purportedly the greatest tool ever invented. This guy goes to a planet, generally messes everything up (damages his ship, blasts a hole into the ground that he falls in, deals with wave after wave of nasty wildlife that won't let up, etc) and when they finally find him years later, he's using a bow and arrow to fend off the wolves (or whatever they were) and using the gun as a hammer. I can't remember the name of the story or who it was by, any help?
