My car manual says the recommended maximum trailer is 1500 lbs with a maximum tongue weight of 150 lbs. I had a Class III hitch installed which is rated to 3500 lbs. As I understand it any trailer weight over 2000lbs requires trailer brakes. My RAV4 weighs around 3200 lbs. Can I legally and safely tow up to 2000 lbs or is the car manufacturer's recommendations law?
