What is the law regarding dependent roomates?

I live with my brother and am going to college but I do not pay rent. His landlord told him that in order for me to stay for more than five days, I would have to sign the lease. This is a problem because I dont have a job and he does not pay rent because he is a resident manager. If I signed the lease I would have to pay half the rent. I was wondering if there were any laws to protect me because I am dependent to my brother and do not have the money to pay because I am trying to get through school.
My brother is not employed by them he has a real job the resident manager is so he doesnt have to pay rent because he just had a baby.

Your brother should go to his employer/LL and tell him that you are his sibling and dependent. He should tell LL that there is no problem to you being added to lease as an occupant, but not as a lessee. Dependent is a term for filing income taxes, not necessarily relevant to leasing.

As you are not a minor, you are not necessarily a protected class/individual. Your brother and you constitute a family.
But many LLs require all occupants of legal age to be listed on lease. LLs have a right to know who is residing in their property.
