What is the income of an entry level state worker? (and kind of off topic...)?

My mother is a dean, my father owns a business, I went to private school with people who had a lot of money. After high school I stopped talking to both my parents and my life has drastically changed. I'm in college right now and also working full time, but as a long term temp, for the state. All of my friends have higher degrees, nice cars, nice apartments, great paying jobs and can afford to travel to london, italy, wherever. Of course I'm jealous and feel inadequate and less than, etc, but more than that I want my life to improve. I want to be able to put my kids in private school and don't want to do it just by marrying someone rich. I also want to travel and fix my quality of living-- and my credit. Its difficult to catch up while in school and working.
So ultimately I guess my question is: if I chose to continue working for the state and gradually move up will I ever make the money I want to be able to give myself in the next few years and my future children later on? What are some figures? State workers make kind of an average income, right?
Yes, I am in college but I am older than the average student and am worried about starting a career at a late age, instead of just continuing as a state employee.
Hope this made sense, it kind of turned into a different question.
Thanks!
