What is the history and origin of the Dutch wishing tree?

In traditional Dutch weddings, a branch is used in place of a guest book. Guests tie on paper leaves with best wishes to the bride and groom written on them. The couple can then take home the branch and use it as a centerpiece or put the leaves in a scrapbook.

How did this tradition begin? Where did it get started and how long ago? I'm asking on behalf of my teacher, who is getting married, and she needs to know by tomorrow, so please respond quickly!!
