What is the dollar dance at a wedding for and dances during it?

I have no clue what it is, and my fiance and I were wondering

The dollar dance is just a fun way to get a little extra money in your pockets and for the guests to each have a chance to visit with you. Male guests line up to dance with the bride, and female guests line up to dance with the groom. To dance with them, you have to give them $1 (usually the maid of honor & best man collect the money). No one has to participate if they don't want to, its just something fun to do!
 
A dollar dance is where the bride a groom get on the dance floor and guests pay to dance with them. I personally find this entire act extremely tacky.
