What is the differnce between a 26x1.25 and 26x1.5 in bicycle?

I'm looking to buy some new tyres for two bikes but they have different numbers what does this mean? Do I need to find a rim with same number to fit in? But I found some 26x1.95 tyre is installed in a 26x1.5 rim.
