British humor is very funny for an educated and a cultured audience, but it requires mental efforts and knowledge, that is why Americans "do not get it". Also, British humor is very ironic.You are left to somewhat fill in the gaps yourself, which I find amusing. American humor is very visual and in-your-face.... "pie in the face" type, the more ridiculous and obnoxious it is, the funnier it is for them.
